Similar to your experience, I recently found out that my son’s English teacher was reading their required reading to them. Not one kid had a copy of the book and these kids are 13 years old. I had the book they were reading and made him read it at home and take it to school. Between that and everything being online, kids are definitely not being exposed to books/reading nearly enough.

framing it as a chore is so stupid. it should be made out to be the beginning of a great adventure...

Agreed. “Required” takes the fun out of reading, especially if you don’t already find it entertaining.

The plus side about this required reading was that I had read the book when I was around his age and loved it so we were able to have some discussions. It turned out to be a good experience.

Are we truly meant to all have the same capabilities? Losing out on the chance to read the written works of the greatest minds may just not be a loss to some. We just perceive it to be. The approach you take shows grace and hope for these young men. Certainly what this world needs more of.
