Hello and welcome back to In Progress.

For those of you new here, and there are a few of you courtesy of some recent Instagram posts, these are slightly less formal, share my thinking type missives, a scattershot look at what I’ve been reading and thinking about, with the odd book review thrown in.

(There is a book review this time actually! It’s a difficult second album of a novel where the author manages to bring it all home.)

I’m actually away right now, spending some time by a chilly lake, and while I was promised rain, so far it’s been beautiful. It’s the kind of place I’d love to run a reading or writing retreat in future.

I’ve got an exciting meeting about my boys’ literacy work here tomorrow, with the kind of person who can get these projects moving. Funding has been the issue so far and I’ll explore a few of my problems and my options in this letter, before talking them through tomorrow.
